Thursday

Hey class!

Good work today!  We started the day with a five, but some of us had a hard time controlling our own behaviors throughout the day so we dipped back down to a four.  I would love it if we could strive to get a 5 tomorrow.

For homework:

Math: P.O.W. due tomorrow.  Remember, a peer will be critiquing your thought process so make sure it is clear.  Study link 2.2 for my class is due tomorrow.

Language arts: You should have your rough draft completed.  I have completed about a third of the conferences.  I hope to meet with several more of you tomorrow.

Reading: no reading reflection this evening (I promised class time to work on P.O.W. but we didn't have enough time... please spend this time finishing your P.O.W)

Vocabulary: Work work unit #4 due tomorrow.  Quiz on unit #4 tomorrow.  Cumulative test (unit 1-3) tomorrow.

Social Studies:  We began our discussion about how the natives died... you do not have homework in this subject.  However, if you want to get a head start, begin studying fact 9-18.  You will have a quiz at the end of next week.

Have a fabulous evening.  It's Friday tomorrow!

Tuesday

Hey class!

Great work today.  I realize there is a lot of work in 5th grade, so it is important to focus hard when you're in class in order to minimize your homework load.

Math: If you're in my group, study link 2.2 is due tomorrow.  P.O.W. due Friday

Social Studies: Codex is due Thursday.  However, the only item you can use on your group quiz tomorrow is your codex.  It would be wise to make sure you have all the information you need written on your codex.  Coloring is secondary to the information.

Language Arts: Your "pre-write outline" should have been completed by last week.  Today, we worked on your "precept essay."  Your rough draft introduction should be completed. If you did not get this done in class, it is homework.  You should have your introduction completed and ready to share with me by tomorrow.

Vocabulary: Unit 4 word work due Friday.  Your cumulative quiz is on Friday (unit 1-3) and you have a regular multiple choice quiz on Friday for unit 4.

Reading:  Complete one reading response (I will be collecting your reading journals tomorrow or on Thursday).

Have a nice evening!

Ms. Evans

Monday

Hello class!

Good work today!

For homework:

Math: P.O.W. #3 is due Friday.  If you're in my math group, you need to have study link 2.1 due tomorrow.

P.O.W. #3: The average person should get 8 hours of sleep.  If this is the case, how many days total has a person who is 10 years old slept?

Reading: One reading reflection (summary and question)
For those of you who are getting stressed out by this, it is not meant to be difficult.  A summary should be anywhere from 2-5 sentences just explaining the significant event that you read about.  The questions range in difficulty, so you are able to challenge yourself as much as you would like.  The reflection piece is intended to get you thinking about what you read and for you to work on your comprehension.  The reflections should not take more than ten minutes.

Vocabulary: Unit #4 word work due Friday and quiz on Friday.  You will also have your first cumulative exam on Friday (unit 1-3).

Language Arts: None.  We will start writing your body paragraphs tomorrow for your "Precept Paper." (Explanatory writing.)

Social Studies: Tomorrow will be the last class period you have to work on your codex.  This will be due on Thursday.

Friday notes...

Hey class!

I am sorry that we had to have such a stern morning, but there is no reason why I should come back from a day out to hear that the class was boisterous and disrespectful.  All of you have the ability to be the best version of yourself and work hard to grow academically and personally this year.  Remember that the hardest years in school are making the transition from 5th to 6th grade and from 8th to 9th.  I am hard on you because I was you to succeed and dominate middle school.  None of you are inept. Let's work hard to push ourselves and each other to reach our maximum potential.  We are at the end of week three and should really know what is expected by now.  You're in control of your own actions and behaviors and I expect that you do everything in your power to be the best person you can be.

Ok... Moving on...

Today we had a very math oriented day.  I do want you all to be mindful when you complete your P.O.W. next week that you will be critiquing work.  This means you need to take extra care when you explain your steps (so they are easy to follow).  If you have questions on your P.O.W. after the normal Monday morning work time, it is important you see me at recess or before school if you're struggling.  As responsible learners, it is important not to wait until the day it is due to see me.  In middle school, that will not be acceptable.  Let's form strong habits now. :).

You do not have homework this weekend, but I do want to remind you that you will have your cumulative flocabulary test next Friday.  That means you will be tested on units 1-3 all together (using the same format as our morning vocabulary warm ups -- fill in the blank, synonym, antonyms) AND you will take a normal unit 4 vocab test (multiple choice).  The cumulative test should not be mind-blowing if you have been using your words and reviewing them a little each day.

I hope you all have a great weekend with your families.  It is my objective that we strive to get all "5's" next week.

It's Friday!

Hello there class!

Today we had to stop a few times and regroup due to noise levels.  Remember, you're in fifth grade now and you are setting the example for all of the other kids in school.  You're now a leader, so it's important that you act as one and lead by example.  Thank you to the students who were always ready to go and respectful -- you're maturity is showing :).

For homework this weekend:

Math: Study link 1.7.  is due on Monday.

Language Arts: Show your parents your quiz from today.  Finish your reading response from class if you didn't finish.  Otherwise, you have no homework.

Enjoy your family and friends this weekend.  I hope you all have a fabulous time and get some rest!

GO BEAVS AND GO DUCKS!

Thursday!

Hello class!

Good work today.  We got a little noisy at some points but I know it's just because you're so amped up about what you're learning. :).

For homework tonight:

Math: Your P.O.W. is due tomorrow.  In the morning, you will discuss the answer you got and your methods for solving it.  The correct answer will be shared tomorrow after you all discuss your methods/answers.

Reading: One reading reflection (summary and one question)

Social Studies: You have been assigned your tribe and were given class time to fill out your note sheet. Tomorrow you will do additional research in library books that have been checked out.  If technology is cooperating, we may get to use the lap tops as well.

Language Arts:  Unit 2 word work is due tomorrow and you have a quiz tomorrow as well on those words.
Today, we went over how to format your paper and write an organized essay.  If you are struggling with the idea of a thesis statement, transition sentences OR the color coding process, please see me as soon as possible.  Suggestion - talk to your parents about the rules they live their life by... we will start officially writing this paper next week.

Science: None.  You will start science next week.

Have a good night -- get rest and be prepared for a fun Friday filled with learning.
(I will also be dominating the soccer field at tomorrow's lunch recess... get ready :))

Wednesday!

Hey class!  Today was incredibly hot, but you guys totally dominated!  Overall, I feel this was our most successful day yet.  Way to go!

We have a busy schedule so we didn't get through everything today, but we have the rest of the week to finish.

For homework tonight:

Math: Study link 1.6, P.O.W. due Friday

Social Studies: Study facts 1-8 if you are re-taking the quiz next Tuesday.  Otherwise, you do not have homework in this subject.

Reading:  Look over the note(s) I wrote in your reading journal.  I will do another journal check in another five school days.  You did not have time to journal in class today, so just do one entry at home (summary and question).

Vocabulary: We did a fun review today in class and you will do another review tomorrow that will include some of the unit one words as well.  You have your unit 2 test on Friday.  Your cumulative test won't be until week four of school (and it will cover units 1-4).  Unit 2 word work is due Friday as well.

Language Arts:  We have started working on some activities to get you thinking about your first formal "informative" paper.  Your prompt will be addressing the idea of living your life by a set of rules.  Be thinking about how you live and how you would like to see the world.  You do not have homework in this subject and we will finish our quote analysis work tomorrow.

Great work today.  Get some rest tonight :).

Ms. Evans

Tuesday

Hey class!  Great work today!

For homework tonight:

Math:   Your P.O.W. is due on Friday.  Remember that you wrote down the problem in your journal, so it won't be hanging out in your binder if you're looking for it there.  Study link 1.5 is due tomorrow.  If you're struggling with the concept of divisibility, make sure you let me know so we can work together.

Reading:  You should read 20 minutes tonight (at least) but you do not have to write in your journal.  I am reviewing them this evening and will have them ready for you in the morning.

Vocabulary:  You have been given your new 15 words this week.  Unit #2 word work is due on Friday.  You will have a quiz on Friday as well (only on unit #2 words).  Your morning "word work" (the analogies and the backside spelling) is due tomorrow morning.

Social Studies:  A handfull of you were a bit disappointed in your performance on the quiz.  I will write up a new quiz that will be available to take next week. You will need to study if you want to do better :).  Come see me if you're struggling.

Have a good night!
Ms. Evans

FOR PARENTS:

Please come join us for "Back to School Night" this evening at 6pm.  It will start in the gym and then you will join me in the portable for a brief review of what transpires in class.   I am looking forward to seeing you again/meeting you :).

Week 2!

Hey class,

It seemed like you all had a fairly restful weekend and are ready to get back to work.  This week, you will start your first formal "informative/explanatory" writing piece.  (Your "My Life" assignment will give me a good idea of your baseline writing skills.)  It is important to note that all of your papers will be shared with me on googledocs and you will engage in peer edits using this tool as well.  If you do not have access to a computer for any reason (there will be times that you may not finish in class) you should speak to me in advance so I can accommodate your needs as best as possible.

For homework tonight:

Math: P.O.W. due Friday 9/13
Language Arts: My Life due tomorrow
Reading: Reading Reflection
Social Studies: study for quiz on facts 1-8 (tomorrow)

Tomorrow's special: Music

Have a good night!

Ms. Evans

First Friday!

Hi class!  I must say I lucked out again this year getting such a great group of kids.  I feel like we have had a great start to the year and I am looking forward to watching all of you grow personally and academically this year.

For homework, please do the following:

Reading: 25 minutes and complete a reading reflection (a summary and one question).  You will only need to do ONE reading reflection over the weekend if you did not get to finish yours today. (you can choose if you do this Friday, Saturday or Sunday).  To be extra clear, you should have a total of six entries up to date (one on Tuesday as a class, two on Wed., two on Thurs. and one for Friday).
Math: No homework.  We will start our math homework next week.  I apologize for those who feel like much of chapter one is review -- although it is review, it is helpful to cover and also lets me understand where exactly each one of you is at.
Vocabulary: You will get a new list of words on Monday.  I am very proud of all of your improvements -- make sure and share your quiz with your parents.
Writing: The rough draft of your "My Life" assignment should be done.  You will type up your final draft Monday and share it with me on googledocs.  (click "share" and type in: chelsey_evans@beaverton.k12.or.us)
Social Studies: We just started our unit on the Native Americans and the Explorers... we did not get to this material today, but we will on Monday.  Because of this change, you will take your quiz on facts 1-8 on Tuesday.  Please remember to give your parents the information on Geo-Themes!

Have fun with friends and family this weekend and be rested for next week!

Happy First Day!

FOR STUDENTS:

Hey class!

I must say I had an awesome day getting to work with all of you and am looking forward to getting to know you all better in the weeks/months to come.  Although things seem intense and may be a bit overwhelming, I promise that once you all get the hang of our class expectations and routines, you'll feel confident to dominate any challenge thrown at you.

Today we spent a lot of time going over routines, expectations and speaking to what all you will be learning this year.  I am excited that the rest of the week we will really get to delve into our curriculum.

At home tonight you should:

1.  Find a book to have at school for your "reading reflections" time after lunch.
2.  Study your new set of vocabulary words. You have a test on Friday.
3.  Give your manila packet of important papers to your parent(s) or guardian(s).
4.  Begin your word work.

I hope you all have a nice evening and get rested up for another exciting day of 5th grade :).

Ms. Evans

FOR PARENTS:

Hello!  I am excited that I have the privilege to work with you and your child.  I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you and hope to see you again at "back to school night" on Sept. 10th (for more information, visit http://www3.beaverton.k12.or.us/bethany/).  However, in the meantime, here are some important notes about our class:

1.  There are weekly vocabulary tests and your student has the materials they need in their binder.
2.  Students do not have a planner this year, but a weekly pink sheet they fill out that has all of their assignments listed on it.  Please ask to see it if they claim the following: "I don't have any homework."
3.  Students will be bringing home important papers from Bethany Elementary in a manila folder.  Please take a look at all of the information it provides and return the required papers.
4.  There is reading homework every night (reading response), however, there is no reading homework the first day of school.

I feel strongly that clear communication between home and school will only aid in your student's success.  Please feel free to email me at any time with any comments/questions/concerns you may have.  chelsey_evans@beaverton.k12.or.us

Thank you for being such a strong support in your child's life!

Hope to see you next week!

Respectfully,
Chelsey
