HOMEWORK OVER THE BREAK:

You have flocabulary work unit 2-3 to complete over work.  This is not punishment, but will allow us to get through all of the 7th/8th grade words before you leave 5th grade :).  These packets will be due the Monday you get back and there will be "Dobby Dollars" awarded for those who complete their expected work.

READ! READ! READ!!!!!!!!!! For those of you who will want to level up on their skill cards, this would be a great time to focus on reading books at your level (that you enjoy).  We will continue our one on one conferences when you all get back from break.

Literary device books -- if you did not finish and turn these in on Friday, you will need to finish these over break.

Sleep, have fun, enjoy your family and friends :).

I will miss you all over the break but I am excited for you to all spend some quality time with loved ones!  I will check our google classroom every so often, but nothing new will be due.

Love you guys, have a wonderful winter break! Be safe, be smart, have fun!

Write a Letter Poem

This week, we covered the news of Kobe Bryant's retirement from professional basketball. To make his announcement, Bryant published a letter poem he had written titled "Dear Basketball." In the poem, he describes his love and memories for the sport in the form of a letter written to the sport itself:

You gave a six-year-old boy his Laker dream
And I’ll always love you for it.
But I can’t love you obsessively for much longer.
This season is all I have left to give.
My heart can take the pounding
My mind can handle the grind
But my body knows it’s time to say goodbye.

For this week's contest, we want you to write a letter poem to an abstract or nonliving thing that you love. You can write your poem to a hobby, talent, favorite food, TV show or anything else you know and love. Whatever you choose, title your poem "Dear ___" and address the poem to that well-loved object or activity. Be sure to make your poem at least 15 lines long.

Have a great night!

Tuesday!

Hey all!

I am happy to hear that the majority of you enjoyed your long weekend -- for those of you who didn't, I know it was because you missed class :).

FOR PARENTS:
We are starting a google classroom.  This will require that students have access to a computer once a week to write their response to a question posed by me.  They will also need to respond to their classmates.   This allows students to collaborate, work on their writing/typing and think critically.  There will be a new question posted every Monday and their responses are due no later than Friday.  If this is a problem, please contact me.

This week's question:

Do you think students should get paid for having good grades and test scores?

For homework this week:

Vocab: WW13 Quiz/Friday

Writing: GCQ (Google Classroom Question) due Friday

Math: All classes have homework.

Anyways, have fun and enjoy yourself.

SEE YOU TUESDAY :).

Miss you guys/gals already.

PLEASE DO THIS (not required, but encouraged).... due to me by Dec. 3rd.

Expression through Art

This week, we covered multiple stories about horrific acts of violence that were carried out by ISIS in Paris and Beirut and on a Russian airliner. Events like these can leave us with a range of emotions, opinions and questions. Your task this week is to create something in response to the recent terrorist acts in any medium you'd like. It can be a rap or a different kind of song, a poem, a drawing or different piece of art, a letter or any other means of expressing yourself. In addition to your feelings and thoughts on the events and how the world has responded so far, we also want you to include questions you have about what is happening and anything specific you'd like to know more about.

Have a happy and safe weekend :).

Design the Test

This week, we covered a story about the new SAT, the test you need to take to gain admission to college. The new SAT will debut in March with many differences from the current test. For example, the reading section will focus more on vocabulary that's useful for college or a career, and it will ask students to figure out the meanings of words in context. The math section will have more word problems than problems based on equations, and the essay will be optional. For this week's contest, we want you to design a test that you think would be the best college admissions assessment. What subjects would it test on? What format would it take — multiple choice questions, open-ended questions, an oral exam, a presentation, some combination of these or another form? How long would the test be? Send us a description of your test and if you'd like, an example question from it.
Note: Students, your teachers must submit for you. Any video submissions should be horizontal.

Heighten the Drama

This week, we covered the first game of the World Series. The 14-inning long game is now tied for the longest in World Series history. It was the Mets' first World Series in 15 years. Not only that, but there was a 4-minute blackout in the broadcast due to technical difficulties, and one of the Royals' players learned of a death in his family after the 6th inning. For this week's shout out contest, we want you to capture—and heighten—the drama of one or two of these events in writing. Become a sports announcer at the field and write up a transcript. Keep the tension high as you commentate. Be creative and keep listeners on the edge of their seats. Send us your transcript of one or two of the most dramatic moments, and if you can, record yourself and send us video or audio of your broadcast too!

Hi class!

It was great to be back.  I missed you all over the long weekend.

Today, our counselor, Julie Stroinski, came in to discuss option schools.  As you are all aware, these schools all have a "specialization" and must be applied for.  Filling out an application does not mean you are guaranteed acceptance.  Unfortunately, these option schools have a lottery system.  If your child is passionate about any of these schools, please check out the district website to attend open houses and fill out an application.  JANUARY 5TH IS THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS

This week's "Week in Rap" challenge (I muse have this typed and submitted to me by this Thursday)

Weather Warnings

This week, we covered two stories about a complex weather pattern known as El Niño. The recent flooding on the West Coast and the continued drought in Ethiopia are results of El Niño conditions. For this week's shout out contest, we want you to research these or other dangers of El Niño. Then, create a PSA, or Public Service Announcement. Your PSA could be a commercial, billboard, radio ad or anything that can get people's attention. Be creative as you warn the public and offer advice for how to prepare.

Monday

Hey class!

Great work today... some announcements for this week:

1.  I am gone for conferences.  I apologize again if this was not made clear enough during back to school night :). An email I sent out today...

Hi, parents!
I have received a few questions regarding conferences and I want to apologize for any confusion that may be occurring, or if I was not clear.  This summer, my parents purchased plane tickets for our family to go to Disneyland for a few days for a family reunion.  Because this was done over the summer, no one had any idea that the trip would be during conferences.  I want to do my best to accommodate you/your family needs, so please let me know if the following dates are not going to work. Unfortunately, I am waiting until November for these to take place because I coach high school soccer at BHS until that month.  My boss informed me that he would set up my conference times online, but in the event it may take longer for that to happen, here is a heads up of the dates I have available.
(All 20 minute appointments)
Nov. 9, 10 and 12... from 7am-8am and 3pm-5pm
Nov. 16-19 from 7am-8am and 3pm-5pm
Monday, Nov. 16 3:20-5pm

If none of these dates work, of course we can schedule something different as well.  If you're linked up with class dojo, check out the website, read your emails and ask your student to see the work handed back, our meeting will provide you with no new information.  It will just be a chance for you to ask questions and express any concerns you may have.  :).

I hope you all had a restful weekend with your family :).

Respectfully,
Chelsey

Hey class!

What a fun day!  Thank you, students, for putting in so much hard work to complete your family history project.  It is so fun learning about your family roots and hearing you all speak with such love about your families.  Special thanks for the parents and families who made today such a success as well.

I'm happy to report you have no homework this weekend, unless you have asked for an extension on your codex (you have until next Wednesday).

Enjoy your family and friends!

Happy Friday

Hey class!

What a great week!

THINGS TO NOTE:

If you are on track for success, you have completed your WW2, My Life and your math homework assignment 8.

Homework:
Normally, I do not give homework on the weekends.  If you happened to have procrastinated, you will be working on your "Family History Basic Information and Artifacts" sheet.  YOU DO NOT need to bring in artifacts for Monday, you just need to have them written down and explained.

Weekly Challenge Assignment: (For entry in the Flocabulary contest)
(This will be due at the beginning of the day, next Thursday.  Submissions need to be emailed to me at chelsey_evans@beaverton.k12.or.us)

Conduct a Survey

This week, we covered a story about how one-third of US children and teens still eat fast food every day. Researchers got this number by surveying children or their parents and asking what the kids had eaten over the previous 24 hours. For this week's contest, we wantyou to design and conduct a survey. Pick a question that you want answered. Maybe you want to know how classmates feel about a certain issue, or you have an opinion about something and want to see if others agree. For example, "Do students in my class like or dislike our school uniforms?" Predict what you think the results will be, and survey your classmates. Write a paragraph summarizing your question, your prediction and your results, and explain why you think they turned out that way. If you'd like, also create a graph, chart, table or another visual representation of your results!

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend!!

Ms Evans :)

Happy Monday!

Hey, class!

STUDENTS AND PARENTS:

This week at a glance (This includes due dates and units of study).

Vocab: WW2 is due Friday and you will have your second quiz

Math: Module 1 -- today we learned about powers of ten and exponents.  It is my hope that you understand the relationship and pattern between multiplying/dividing numbers by 10 (and powers of ten). Homework Lesson 3 is due tomorrow!

For instance:

3.45 x 100 = 345.  Notice you move the decimal point over to the right two spots (there are two zeros in the number 100) to get your answer.

41.567 x 10^4 = 415,670. Notice you move the decimal point over to the right four spots (there are four zeros in 10,000) to get your answer.

THIS PATTERN IS THE SAME FOR DIVIDING, YOU JUST MOVE THE DECIMAL THE OPPOSITE WAY.

412.67 x 10^3 = .41267  Notice you move the decimal point over three spots (there are three zeros in 1,000) to get your answer.

Reading: You guys will finish the reading strategies this week (Contrast and contradictions, Aha moment, tough questions, memory moment, words of the wise, repetition).
We will start your reading/writing journals later this week!

Writing: My life is due this Friday! We will start crafting our essays for the family history project later this week as well.

Social Studies: We started our unit on the native americans today!

("Bee" nice to them :))

Friday :)

Hey, class!

What a fun week!  It truly has been a pleasure getting to work with you all this first week. Have a relaxing weekend filled with family and fun :).

PARENTS:

Your student took their first "Flocabulary" test.  I have stapled their pretest to their post test and I am happy to report EVERY STUDENT made great improvements.  Please have them show you their tests.

I am starting your kids on the 6th grade vocab work and they will end the year completing all of the 6th, 7th and 8th grade vocabulary (630 words).  You may ask why I am starting them on 6th grade and having them complete the 7th and 8th -- to answer, studies show a direct link between academic success and vocabulary development. :).

A quick note about homework on the weekends... rarely will I give homework on the weekends.  I understand this is a time for family, for extra curricular activities and also a time to recharge for the upcoming week.  If you feel adamant that your child do work on the weekend, they can always log on to mobymax and get more practice work there.

STUDENTS:

You do not have homework this weekend unless you did not complete your Lesson 2 math homework.

Thursday, September 10, 2015

Thursday

Hey class!

Great work today.  I know that we spent two hours with math this morning, so we will continue on our second lesson in Module 1 tomorrow.  We will also go over your homework from Wednesday tomorrow as well.

PARENTS:
Today, your student was given a "placement test" for math using our new program called "Moby Max."  This is a online program similar to IXL, but better :).  Your child has their username/password written in their planners and can access this website anytime they are connected to the internet.  Please encourage your child to spend as much time on this program whenever they have free time. The more practice they get with math/reading/writing, the better they will be!  Have your student show you!

https://www.mobymax.com/or94

STUDENTS:

Homework today...

Vocab:
Your WW1 packet is due tomorrow (9/11)
You have a quiz on WW1 words tomorrow (9/11)

Writing:
Continue working on "My Life."  You will get some time during school hours, but this will be due next Friday (9/18)

Get thinking about who you are interviewing for your family history project as well.

Math:
We will review your homework (lesson 1) tomorrow and we will cover lesson 2 tomorrow as well.

Wednesday, September 9, 2015

Happy Wednesday!

Hi, class!

Great work today.  I am so happy we are off to such a great start this year.

For parents:
Today we went over a new classroom routine that will happen every Tues/Thurs (fluency tracking). It is my hope that when your child is at home reading, they do take a few minutes to not only discuss what they are thinking about/learning from their book but read out loud to you as well.  This allows them to work on their oral fluency, which they will be improving this year.

For math, we will be working on our first "Module" together as a group.  This module is intended to be review and has your child master how to fluently multiply/divide decimals by 10s, 100s, 1,000s. After this module is completed, your student will be switching math classes for one that will best suite their individual needs.

For writing, it is my assumption that your child has spoken with you about the "family history project." We will work more on this in the next couple of weeks.  For this week and next, I have assigned a mini-project called "My life." The purpose is to get to know your student on a personal level (likes, goals, hopes, stressors) so I can make class relevant and fun for your student.  This project will be due next Friday (9/18).

For homework in general, please note that some assignments will be due the following day and some will be more long term in nature.  The reason for this is to allow students to work on their time management skills.  Next year, not all homework given will be due the next day.  This year, some students will have to learn the hard way (like I did when I was in 5th grade) that procrastination, although lovely at the start, really can be quite awful.  Please check in with your child to help them prioritize.  The more reinforcement they receive on how to plan their time wisely, the easier it will become.

As always, if you have questions please feel free to email me (chelsey_evans@beaverton.k12.or.us).
However, if you have questions about your student turning in homework, please always check with them first.  It is my goal that this year, your child owns their learning and becomes a self advocate.  In middle school, independence and self advocacy is key to their success.  I want them to be prepared to dominate their 6th grade year (and the years to follow :))!

For students:

HOMEWORK... EVERYONE LOVES HOMEWORK... RIGHT!?

Math: Lesson 1 homework is due tomorrow.  If you don't understand something, you MUST TRY and make a note what is confusing -- be ready to ask a question when we review the answers.

Writing:
My Life (part one and part two) is due next Friday (9/18).
Family history informative slip (parent signature) is due next Friday (9/18)
Family history interview questions (the white packet) are due Monday 9/21.

Vocabulary:
WW1 is due Friday (9/11)
First vocab quiz (over WW1 words) is on Friday (9/11)
